BVN presents Retrofitting Our Cities with two events at Melbourne Design Week, supported by GPT. Retrofitting Our Cities ignites dialogue and innovation within Melbourne's architecture and design community about sustainable adaptive re-use and place-making. It's time to focus on the transformation of existing buildings to enhance our CBDs.

Through two dynamic events, we’ll engage minds and inspire change: a 'design sprint' competition tailored for recent graduates and students, and a thought-provoking panel discussion where BVN, The GPT Group, KTA, and Breathe explore opportunities to retrofit, repurpose and re-life unassuming buildings to add value and vibrancy to our cities.

We simply cannot afford to continue building new in the same way we do now. In this engaging panel discussion, we delve into the opportunities and challenges to upgrade, upcycle and reimagine the many B, C, and D Grade buildings that make up the majority of our cities.

Retrofitting Our Cities Panel explores how bold, sustainable architectural interventions and urban design initiatives can revitalise these buildings into premium commercial assets and/or mixed-use prospects while enriching CBD pockets so they become vibrant community hubs.

Panellists:

Calling all architecture and design students and recent graduates! How can we increase the capacity and improve the quality of what is already built rather than simply building more? What if a building’s carbon heritage has just as much importance as its cultural heritage? How can we reimagine our cities as more-than-human habitats?

Retrofitting Our Cities Design Sprint presents a unique opportunity for Melbourne’s emerging design talent to tackle real-world challenges that face our cities. It's time to accelerate adaptive re-use and repurposing of our existing buildings - at scale - while considering material circularity and the enrichment of urban spaces.
